Why Windmills? This tournament is set-up in a place where the old Dutch Windmills are still operational. Tourist from all over the world visits the Netherlands. The "Alblaserwaard" is the only place in the Netherlands where there are still many Windmills working.
Taekwondo Team Papendrecht is placed in the centre of this area and that's why we called the tournament after the many windmills in this region.
So then we thought that we maybe could organize a small tournament in our own dojo. This whole tournament began very small in our own club. We wanted for our students to do some experience before entering the large tournaments. It gave our selection the opportunity to develop in there own way and of course we knew now how to build a tournament. After 5 tournaments we were investigation how it would be to have an own tournament.
Windmills was born, the first tournament was with Samsung Electronics. This company gave as support in the commercial matters as well financial. 3 weeks before the deadline we had more that 600 competitors from all over the Netherlands. The first tournament was very successful, highly qualified taekwondoka's participated with great success. In this first tournament we had competitors from Germany & Belgium and the international interest was a fact!
This year we had competitors from and for third consecutive time, this International Taekwondo Championship invited participants from England, Lithuania, Spain, Bahrain, Japan, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Portugal, Ireland, Belarus, Luxemburg, India, Kenya, Moldova, Nigeria, Finland, Pakistan, Israel, Cameroon, Poland and the Netherlands. In the last year the tournament had 450 highly qualified taekwondoka's, 46 professional international referees using competition areas with a full electronic score system. The tournament is organised according a well-defined time schedule by a professional organisation committee.
